I've been a web designer for a long time, and when I started, I did NOT have great processes in place, and I DID have some projects that went sideways. (Did I ever tell you about the architect and the 5 billion shades of blue?)

There was scope creep. The "my sister's cousin's cat doesn't like the font." And the "oh, could you also rework the logo?" email the night before launch.

Now every new inquiry gets a questionnaire before we ever talk, and it does most of the filtering for me.

This is geared toward web designers, but if you are a service provider, think about adding something like this to your process.

Two of my favorite questions are:

Which project in my portfolio jumps out at you, and why? If nothing in your portfolio speaks to them, think hard before you take the project. This question has saved me so much grief.

What would it take for you to consider this project a success? Understand whether they want a simple website, a full agency experience, or expect 10,000 site visitors on day 1.

The form also uses conditional logic, so what they see next depends on their answers. Someone who says they want to work with a copywriter gets a note that I'll send them a couple of options. Someone who doesn't have branding gets a note about my mini-brand add-on service.

And my finished questionnaire is saved as a template you can copy. Just swap out the logo and image, then tweak the form to fit your own process.
